MUAR: The High Court here awarded a couple and their 10-year-old son a total of RM870,000 due to medical negligence by two hospitals and the Government during the child’s birth.
The couple Zainab Sam, 45, husband ex-army Sjn Rosli Mohd Amin, 53, and son Ahmad Alif Iqmal Rosli were present when Judicial Commissioner Datuk Ummi Kalthum Abdul Majid passed the decision on Friday.

Man awarded RM1.2m for losing eye during surgery

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has awarded RM1.2 million in damages to a company legal manager who lost his right eye during a surgery 11 years ago.

Judicial commissioner Zura Yahya also awarded Megat Noor Ishak Megat Ibrahim costs and interest. Of the amount, RM1 million was for aggravated damages.

Zura said she was of the opinion that the blindness in Megat Noor's eye was because of bleeding (suprachoroidal haemorrhage) as a result of bucking (sudden movement).

"Therefore, the first and second defendants breached their duty of care when they failed to warm the plaintiff (Megat Noor) of the risk of bucking," she said.

‘Only dial 999 when it’s vital’, Yorkshire Ambulance Service chiefs warn

AMBULANCE bosses have urged people only to phone 999 when absolutely necessary, after soaring fuel prices left them with an £850,000 budget black hole.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) said too many people were calling for ambulances needlessly, because they thought it would help them jump the queue for treatment at hospital.

ABSTRACT

Motivation - To understand a new work role in emergency medical services, the relationship between situation awareness (SA) and decision-making among emergency care practitioners (ECPs) is examined. Research approach - A scoping study was completed and involved observations (36 hours of ride-outs and 4 hours of sit-ins) and semi-structured interviews with a group of ECPs and Triage Nurses at an ambulance control room. A subject matter expert was consulted to validate a communication map derived from the observations and interviews. Findings/Design - The results show that system’s factors could affect the creation of SA and decision-making. As a result, a framework for SA and decision-making among ECPs was developed. Originality/Value - This study extends the study of SA into emergency medical services domain. It also contributes in understanding a new practitioner role in the UK. Take away message - Factors related to the development of SA should be understood to support decisionmaking among ECPs and thereby improve the quality of care in emergency medicine.

Ambulance calls rise after England World Cup games

There was a 54% rise in Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire compared with a week earlier after Wednesday's 1-0 win over Slovenia.

West Midlands Ambulance Service reported nearly 60% more calls than average in the region after England's first World Cup game on 12 June.

Although not particularly liking Shakira & Wham, I none the less know of their songs. Hips Don't Lie and Careless Whispers are two songs that caught my attention.

Careless Whispers tells that 'guilty feet has got no rhythm'. When that line is put next to 'hips don't lie', I saw a sweet parallel that speaks of non-verbal communication. It is true that body language is more truthful than spoken language. People can't control the messages communicated by their body than the ones commnicated through spoken words. So, if you're feeling guilty, your tounge can deny ooutright the guilt, or the wrong that gav rise to the guilt. But your feet will betray you; the same way that the hips don't lie.

The idea that a body can't lie is also true in a world that we have yet to see. In alam akhirah, Allah says in surah Ya-Sin, "On that day we will seal their mouths; their hands and feet will bear witness to everything they had done[36:65].

Patient Safety Council of Malaysia (PSCOM) has been formalised by the Malaysian Cabinet on the 29th of January 2003.
This council is to be chaired by the Director- General of Health Malaysia
It monitor Incident Reporting for Malaysia, which includes all the medical errors and any adverse events
It was set up (1) to look at the quality (including safety) of healthcare service in the healthcare industry and, (2) to advise the Honourable Minister of Health on the relevant strategies and actions to be taken in order to prevent or minimize errors in the health field, in an effort (3) to promote systemic improvements in the safety and quality of healthcare in Malaysia.
Members of the Council include health-related non-governmental organizations (NGO) such as Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), and Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia (APHM), Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) to be represented by Federation of Malaysia Consumer Associations (FOMCA), representatives of Teaching hospitals and various Divisions in the Ministry of Health as well as prominent members of the Malaysian society

A discovery today was a double-edged sword. I found out that there exist an Institute for Health Systems Research in Malaysia. I was a good thing because it means I would have a government-based institution to refer to and collaborate with. It was not a so-good thing because that may mean there is a duplication of research body with the one that I want to propose. I mean, the name that I have in mind is highly similar to this one. I may have to find another name for my proposal

Brief introduction to the project

Studies on situation awareness (SA) in complex systems show their value for system evaluation, especially in relation to safety. SA are usually conceptualised at the individual. In healthcare, SA is not as widely studied as in other domains. Changing demands for the way health care is delivered led to the creation of a new role in emergency medical services namely Emergency Care Practitioner (ECP). A study is thus proposed to examine the relationship between SA and performance among ECP. Preliminary analysis of ECP communication at the macro level yielded research questions that will be followed up. The proposed study is expected to reveal the applicability of SA in emergency medical services and assist in understanding the ECP’s role.

Surah Saba'

I've just finished reading the translation of the Quran. Having done that, I want to go back and read in more detail surah Saba'. On my first read, the surah says a lot about perception. And I believe I can gain some insights that are related to my PhD works.

The general impression that I get is that Allah has the power to perceive everything. He is aware of all things that happen. In contrast, humans has a lot of limitations in their perceptual power. Not only human, but djinns are also mentioned in the surah. And I find the irony very interesting.

I'll try to dig deeper into this surah, and will share with you the irony later.

The Impetus

Manchester certainly did something for me. I was pregnant with an idea back in Loughborough. In less than 24 hours being in Manchester, the idea of having this blog was delivered.

The objectives of this blogs are
1) to encourage regular writing on topics that are related to my PhD
2) to collate and document information related to my PhD
3) to generate input in terms of comments, ideas, and references from the public

I wanted to create a blog that is separate from my personal blog that is dedicated to my son. This new blog would enable a greater range of input, from myself and from readers, hopefully, and a deeper coverage of work-related topics. Nonetheless, the blog is still relevant to my son because one reason for me doing the PhD is him.

People asked me when I would finish my PhD. Some were surprised to learn that it takes 3 years to finish. I foresee this blog reaching its climax in September 2010 when I expect to have my viva voce. However, I hope the climax will ease into a refractory period to be followed by continuous scholarly stimulations. This is in line with my ambition to pursue situation awareness as a reserach topic well beyond my PhD. Looking forward to a long and productive time with this blog.
